May 6, 2020

Dr. Yongping Zhai, the Chief of Asian Development Bank’s Energy Sector Group explains his journey from the African Development bank to Asian Development Bank just after the Asian Financial Crisis. He shares his observations on the changing priorities for the energy sector as countries have developed, and explains how his team prioritizes environmental sustainability and climate change, which is at the forefront of today’s priorities.

He discusses the trilemma—access to energy, availability, and cheap or free supply, and shares his view on the role technology might play in solving tomorrow’s challenges. He is passionate about three technologies, clean heating or clean cooking with solar, microgrid, and digital solutions, and is looking for solutions even with a $500,000 prize for the right technology. In the end, in explaining ADB’s Strategy 2030 and how it may change the energy sector, he shares his controversial view about the future of the ADB’s energy sector beyond 2025.
